WHAT WE DO
OSGOOD-SCHLATTER DISEASE
Osgood-Schlatter Disease (OSD) is a tractional apophysitis where pain and inflammation of the growth plate of the tibial tuberosity (the bump on your shinbone found just below the knee cap where the patellar tendon attaches) occurs due to increased force from the tendon on the bone. The good news is OSD is self-limiting, meaning it will resolve itself within a few years once growth stops and the growth plate ossifies (turns to bone). In the meantime there are a variety of treatment options for the condition.
Once your condition is diagnosed and all other possible causes for your knee pain have been ruled out, your podiatrist will discuss treatment options. These options include R.I.C.E (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation), orthotic therapy to control excessive pronation, stretching and strengthening exercises of the muscles around the knee, medication such as anti-inflammatories, and taping of the knee.
